Is E469 (Enzymatically hydrolysed carboxymethyl cellulose) halal?

The UK FSA 25 June 2026 list names E469 as enzymatically hydrolysed carboxy methyl cellulose, a cellulose derivative related to E466. It is not sodium caseinate. That milk protein was mis-filed on this code. No grade A/B certifier page is cited for the cellulose derivative as a class, so this stays insufficient-evidence. It does not inherit a verified label from E466.

UnverifiedNot enough reliable source evidence to classify

Identity corrected 2026-10-04. E469 is not sodium caseinate. Not a ruling.

What to verify

For E469 in this product: is the fat from plant oil, synthetic, or animal? If animal, which species and was it slaughtered as halal?

The detail

EcodeHalalCheck and RxHalal had called E469 sodium caseinate and treated it as generally halal. Those are grade C aggregators and they named the wrong substance. The FSA approved-additives list prints E469 as enzymatically hydrolysed carboxy methyl cellulose. Sodium caseinate is a separate milk-protein ingredient and now has its own stub. Parent-code matching does not copy E466 onto E469.

What the sources say

Grade C cards are the old notes. They are not the current label. A later grade A or B citation is dated on its own card.

How to check it yourself

If the label says sodium caseinate, open that ingredient, not E469. If it says E469, it is a cellulose derivative — still not a verified class ruling.
