Where scholars disagree
Some halal questions do not have one answer. On these 22 entries, named certifiers and schools take conflicting positions — the honest move is to show you all of them.
For gelatin, vanilla extract and carmine there is a school-of-thought grid — Hanafi, Shafiʿi, Maliki, Hanbali, Jaʿfari. A blank cell means no cited position, not a guessed ruling.
Almond extract
Almond flavour in alcohol and water — the same carrier question as vanilla extract. Some bottles use glycerin or propylene glycol instead. Follow the ethanol-in-flavourings disagreement; do not copy it onto drinking amaretto.
- Permissible (with conditions) — IslamQA.info
- Permissible (Hanafi criteria) — Darul Iftaa Chicago (Hanafi)
- Avoid above 0.1% alcohol — IFANCA (Islamic Food and Nutrition Council of America)
CBD (Cannabidiol)
Named Hanafi fatwas disagree on the frame, not on THC. Darul Ifta Birmingham and FatwaCentre permit CBD when it is not intoxicating and THC is absent. Darul Uloom Trinidad treats cannabis oil extract as tadaawi bil haram — only under darura, with no alternative, prescribed by a reliable Muslim doctor. IslamicPortal permits medicinal CBD and forbids THC. Muttoo does not pick a winner. The softgel and the carrier oil are separate rows.
- Permissible if pure CBD, no THC — Darul Ifta Birmingham (Alimah Nasima Umm Hamza / Mufti Mohammed Tosir Miah)
- Not impermissible if not intoxicating — FatwaCentre (Mufti Abdul Rahman Mangera / Mufti Zubair Patel)
- Only as tadaawi bil haram (darura) — Darul Uloom Trinidad and Tobago (Mufti Waseem Khan)
- Medicinal CBD permitted; THC not permitted — IslamicPortal (Shaykh Yusuf Shabbir)
Calamari
Squid, usually fried. Named positions disagree. Hanafi: calamari/squid is not samak (AskMufti; Darul Fiqh — no spine, gill, fins), so not permitted. islamqa.info: all food from the sea is permissible. Muttoo does not pick a winner. Shared fryer and garlic butter are extra checks. Oyster and clam are not auto-copied.
- Not fish (Hanafi) — AskMufti (Moulana Yusuf Laher / Mufti Siraj Desai)
- Not permitted (Hanafi — not samak) — Darul Fiqh (Shaykh Faraz ibn Adam)
- All food from the sea is permissible — Islam Question & Answer (islamqa.info)
Carmine (cochineal)
A red dye crushed from cochineal insects. The majority of scholars and most certifiers rule it haram; a minority permit it. This is a genuine disagreement, not a settled matter.

Clams
A bivalve. Named positions disagree. Hanafi: Darul Iftaa Birmingham names clams with crabs, squid and lobster as not-fish. islamqa.info 1919: all food from the sea is permissible. SeekersGuidance Shafiʿi permits other shellfish that cannot live on land. Muttoo does not pick a winner. Linguine alle vongole, a wine steam, and bacon in a New England chowder are plate checks. Scallops were not copied — no named scallop fatwa URL.
- Not fish (Hanafi) — extremely disliked — Darul Iftaa Birmingham (Maulana Nabil Khan / Mufti Mohammed Tosir Miah)
- All food from the sea is permissible — Islam Question & Answer (islamqa.info)
- Permissible (Shafiʿi — other shellfish) — SeekersGuidance (Shafiʿi fiqh)
Crab
A crustacean, not a scaled fish. Named positions disagree. Hanafi: crab was not considered fish by the Arabs, so it is not permitted (Shaykh Faraz Rabbani). islamqa.info 1919: all food from the sea is permissible. Shafiʿi (SeekersGuidance): crabs that cannot live on land are lawful. Muttoo does not pick a winner. Soft-shell, snow crab and dungeness are this animal, not second rulings. A crab stick is usually surimi.
- Not permitted (Hanafi — not fish) — SeekersGuidance (Shaykh Faraz Rabbani)
- All food from the sea is permissible — Islam Question & Answer (islamqa.info)
- Permissible (Shafiʿi — aquatic game) — SeekersGuidance (Shafiʿi fiqh)

- Haram (Hanafi — not fish) — Darul Ifta, Darul Uloom Deoband
Crawfish
A freshwater crustacean. Named positions disagree. Darul Iftaa Birmingham: some Hanafi scholars class crayfish as fish (permissible), others do not. islamqa.info 1919: all food from the sea is permissible. Shafiʿi (SeekersGuidance): crayfish that cannot live on land are lawful. Muttoo does not pick a winner. A Louisiana boil that shares the pot with sausage is the pot, not this animal.
- Hanafi split — fish or not — Darul Iftaa Birmingham (Maulana Muddasser Dhedhy / Mufti Mohammed Tosir Miah)
- All food from the sea is permissible — Islam Question & Answer (islamqa.info)
- Permissible (Shafiʿi — aquatic game) — SeekersGuidance (Shafiʿi fiqh)
Cricket protein
Powdered house crickets. This is the insect question, not a missing label. Most certifiers and the majority of scholars treat land insects as haram; a minority Maliki discussion permits some. Muttoo does not pick a side. Mealworm protein is a sister row.
- Haram (Hanafi — insects except locusts) — FatwaCentre (Mufti Abdul Rahman Mangera / Mufti Zubair Patel)
- Minority Maliki permission for some insects — HalalCodeCheck
Crocodile
A land-water predator with fangs. islamqa.info 1919: the correct view is that eating crocodile is not allowed. islamqa.info 146155 notes a difference of scholarly opinion on eating them. Muttoo does not pick a winner and does not upgrade mashbooh to haram. Frog is a sister verified-haram row (killing forbidden) and is not copied here. Alligator is listed as an alias of the same disagreement, not a second animal ruling.
- Not allowed (preferred view) — Islam Question & Answer (islamqa.info)
- Difference of scholarly opinion — Islam Question & Answer (islamqa.info)
Ethanol in flavourings
Most 'natural flavour' on a label is a compound dissolved in ethanol. Whether trace carrier alcohol is acceptable is a threshold question — and the named thresholds disagree with each other by a factor of five.
- Accepted below 0.5% (most certifiers) — HalalExpo (Editorial Team)
- Avoid above 0.1% — IFANCA (Islamic Food and Nutrition Council of America)
- Mashbooh (JAKIM distinction) — HalalExpo
- Haram (as solvent) — HalalCodeCheck
Krill oil
Oil from Antarctic krill, a crustacean. Cited Hanafi fatwas disagree with each other (one treats krill like prawns, one rejects it as not-fish). Shafiʿi, Maliki and Hanbali positions on sea creatures are broader; some Jaʿfari answers require shrimp-or-scaled-fish. The porcine gelatin softgel is a separate, source-dependent check.
- Permissible (Hanafi — prawn analogy) — FatwaCentre (Mufti Abdul Rahman Mangera / Mufti Zubair Patel)
- Not permissible (Hanafi — not fish) — Ask Imam (Mufti Ebrahim Desai)
- Conditional (Jaʿfari — only if it is shrimp) — Ask the Sheikh (Sheikh Mansour Leghaei)
Lobster
A crustacean, not a scaled fish. Named positions disagree. Hanafi: lobster was not considered fish by the Arabs, so it is not permitted (Shaykh Faraz Rabbani); Darul Iftaa Birmingham adds that it only inherits the prawn ikhtilaf if it is classed as a 'big prawn'. islamqa.info 1919: all food from the sea is permissible. Shafiʿi (SeekersGuidance): shellfish that cannot live on land are lawful. Muttoo does not pick a winner. Butter, a shared pot, and a bisque are plate checks. Oyster and scallop were not copied.
- Not permitted (Hanafi — not fish) — SeekersGuidance (Shaykh Faraz Rabbani)
- Hanafi: only if classed as a big prawn — Darul Iftaa Birmingham (Maulana Muddasser Dhedhy / Mufti Mohammed Tosir Miah)
- All food from the sea is permissible — Islam Question & Answer (islamqa.info)
- Permissible (Shafiʿi — aquatic game) — SeekersGuidance (Shafiʿi fiqh)
Mealworm protein
Powdered yellow mealworm larvae. Same insect disagreement as cricket protein and as carmine — except carmine is a scale insect used as colour, and this is the animal as food. Follow the scholar you follow.
- Haram (Hanafi — insects except locusts) — FatwaCentre (Mufti Abdul Rahman Mangera / Mufti Zubair Patel)
- Minority Maliki permission for some insects — HalalCodeCheck
Mussels
A bivalve. Named positions disagree. Hanafi: mussels are not samak (Darul Fiqh), so not permitted. islamqa.info: all food from the sea is permissible. Muttoo does not pick a winner. Moules-frites and a wine steam are extra checks. Oysters and clams are sister names, not auto-copied rulings.
- Not permitted (Hanafi — not samak) — Darul Fiqh (Shaykh Faraz ibn Adam)
- All food from the sea is permissible — Islam Question & Answer (islamqa.info)
- Permissible (Shafiʿi — aquatic game) — SeekersGuidance (Shafiʿi fiqh)
Octopus
A cephalopod, not a scaled fish. Named positions disagree. Hanafi: octopus is not samak (Darul Fiqh / Shaykh Faraz Adam), so not permitted. islamqa.info: all food from the sea is permissible. Muttoo does not pick a winner. Tako, pulpo and a shared grill are plate questions. Uni was not copied.
- Not permitted (Hanafi — not samak) — Darul Fiqh (Shaykh Faraz ibn Adam)
- All food from the sea is permissible — Islam Question & Answer (islamqa.info)
Oyster sauce
Oyster extract, sugar and soy — a condiment, not the animal and not a brand. Named positions disagree. Hanafi: Darul Iftaa Birmingham Fatwa 06831 — oyster sauce is impermissible to use because oysters are not fish. Darul Fiqh: avoid; it contains extracts of oyster. Mufti Ebrahim Desai’s 2003 map names oyster extract: Hanafi no; Shafiʿi, Maliki and Hanbali yes. islamqa.info 1919 permits all food from the sea. Muttoo does not pick a winner. Vegetarian oyster-flavoured sauce is a different product.
- Not permitted (Hanafi — not fish) — Darul Iftaa Birmingham (Alimah Saleha Bukhari Islam)
- Avoid (Hanafi — oyster extract) — Darul Fiqh
- Four-school map — Hanafi no, other three yes (oyster extract) — Albalagh (Mufti Ebrahim Desai)
- All food from the sea is permissible — Islam Question & Answer (islamqa.info)
- Permissible (Shafiʿi — other shellfish) — SeekersGuidance (Shafiʿi fiqh)
Oysters
The bivalve, not oyster sauce and not oyster mushroom. Named positions disagree. Hanafi: oysters are not fish, so not permitted (Darul Iftaa Birmingham; Darul Uloom Deoband). Mufti Ebrahim Desai’s 2003 four-school map names oyster: Hanafi no; Shafiʿi, Maliki and Hanbali yes. SeekersGuidance Shafiʿi: oysters are aquatic game. islamqa.info 1919: all food from the sea is permissible. Muttoo does not pick a winner. Raw service, mignonette and a fried oyster’s batter are plate checks. Clams are a sister row with their own named cite. Scallops were not copied.

- Permissible (Shafiʿi — aquatic game) — SeekersGuidance (Shafiʿi fiqh)
- All food from the sea is permissible — Islam Question & Answer (islamqa.info)
Peppermint extract
Peppermint oil in ethanol, or in glycerin. Same scholarly split as other culinary alcohol carriers. Peppermint oil (the essential oil, no ethanol) is a different pack. Candy-cane flavouring on a label is usually this row plus sugar.
- Permissible (with conditions) — IslamQA.info
- Permissible (Hanafi criteria) — Darul Iftaa Chicago (Hanafi)
- Avoid above 0.1% alcohol — IFANCA (Islamic Food and Nutrition Council of America)
Scallops
The adductor muscle of a bivalve, not a scaled fish. Named positions disagree. Hanafi: Darul Iftaa Birmingham (Tosir Miah) names scallop — similar to oyster, not permitted to eat; buying and selling is allowed because other schools disagree. SANHA names scallops as not permitted for Hanafis and reports the Shafiʿi permit for seafood except frogs, turtles and crocodiles. islamqa.info 1919: all food from the sea is permissible. Muttoo does not pick a winner. Bacon wrap and wine-butter sear are plate checks. Cockles were not copied.
- Not permitted (Hanafi — not fish) — Darul Iftaa Birmingham (Mufti Mohammed Tosir Miah)
- Not permitted for Hanafis; Shafiʿi permits seafood except frogs/turtles/crocodiles — South African National Halaal Authority (SANHA)

- Permissible (Shafiʿi — other shellfish) — SeekersGuidance (Shafiʿi fiqh)
Shellac
The shine on chocolate raisins, jelly beans and coated tablets comes from a resin secreted by the lac insect. Whether that makes it haram is a live disagreement between certifiers — we show each position.
- Haram (always avoid) — HalalExpo (Editorial Team)
- Haram (JAKIM, BPJPH) — HalalExpo
- Mushbooh (avoid unless confirmed) — HalalCodeCheck

Shrimp
Two named Hanafi fatwas disagree on whether shrimp/prawn is fish (samak). Darul Iftaa Leicester (Mufti Muhammad ibn Adam) permits prawns as fish by Arabic usage. Ask Imam (Mufti Ebrahim Desai) forbids shrimp because it is not a vertebra. Muttoo shows both and does not pick a winner. Shafiʿi, Maliki and Hanbali columns stay blank until a named primary fatwa URL is on file — a textbook ‘all seafood’ rule is not copied in. Batter, shared fryer, and cocktail sauce are separate checks. Krill oil is a sister row.
- Permissible (Hanafi — fish by Arabic usage) — Darul Iftaa Leicester (Mufti Muhammad ibn Adam)
- Not permissible (Hanafi — not a vertebra) — Ask Imam (Mufti Ebrahim Desai)
Vanilla extract
Real vanilla extract is vanilla beans steeped in alcohol and water. Whether that alcohol carrier matters is one of the most genuinely contested questions in applied halal food rulings.
- Permissible (with conditions) — IslamQA.info
- Permissible (Hanafi criteria) — Darul Iftaa Chicago (Hanafi)
- Avoid above 0.1% alcohol — IFANCA (Islamic Food and Nutrition Council of America)
- Haram (ethanol as solvent) — HalalCodeCheck
