Emulsifier, thickener or gelling agent
Is E422 (Glycerin) halal?
A sweet humectant that keeps foods moist. The molecule is identical whether it came from palm oil or pig fat — which is exactly why the source has to be declared or certified.
Plant-derived and synthetic glycerin are halal and accepted by JAKIM, BPJPH, MUIS and GCC certifiers. Pork-derived glycerin is rejected by all major certifiers. An undeclared source cannot be cleared from the label.
What we know
Named sources are on this page. Classification: Source-dependent.
What we don’t know
The pack in your hand does not, by itself, name the raw material or process.
Why it matters
Doubtful until the source is known (mashbooh)
What to verify
For E422 in this product: is the fat from plant oil, synthetic, or animal? If animal, which species and was it slaughtered as halal?
The detail
Glycerin is produced as a by-product of vegetable-oil soap making (palm, coconut, soy), synthesised from propylene, or rendered from animal fat. HalalExpo's checker records plant-derived glycerin as accepted by JAKIM, BPJPH, MUIS and all GCC certifiers, and porcine glycerin as unanimously rejected. ISA states E422 is haram if obtained from pork or non-halal-certified meat sources. IFANCA lists glycerin among mashbooh ingredients across candy, gum and mouthwash. HalalCodeCheck notes the Hanafi, Maliki and Shafi'i mainstream accepts a 'suitable for vegetarians/vegans' disclosure, while the stricter HMC-leaning view prefers formal certification.
What the sources say
Mushbooh, called Glycerin in USA, Halal if it is from plant fat, Haraam if it is from pork fat
Accepted as halal by JAKIM, BPJPH, MUIS, and all GCC certifiers. ... Haram — unanimously rejected by all major halal certifiers.
Glycerol / Glycerin / Glycerine (E422) – haram if obtained from pork or non-Halal certified meat sources
Candy — Glycerin, Gelatin, Monoglycerides…
Treat as doubtful until a 'suitable for vegetarians/vegans' label or halal mark confirms the source.
Where you will run into it
- Candy and fudge
- Chewing gum
- Icings and fondant
- Mouthwash and toothpaste
- Supplement softgels and cough syrups
How to check it yourself
Look for 'vegetable glycerin', a vegan mark, or a halal logo. Bare 'glycerin' or 'E422' with no source is the case IFANCA tells you to call the manufacturer about.
What to ask the manufacturer
A recognised halal mark or a vegan declaration can settle this instead. If you email the brand, send one specific question:

Other ingredients — the bottle audit
Pharmacists do not certify a brand from the front of the tub. They read the shell, the lubricant, the carrier and the colour. Each line is a catalogue row. This is not a product certificate.
- Capsule shell. Gelatin, HPMC (hypromellose) or pullulan. Bare gelatin follows the capsule row — it is not the powder. Gelatin capsules · HPMC · Pullulan
- Glycerin / glycerol. Softgels and liquid drops. Plant or synthetic settles it; animal fat does not. The bottle rarely says which. E422 glycerol
- Magnesium stearate. The lubricant in most tablets. Vegetable or synthetic vs animal including porcine. A vegetarian capsule does not settle the powder inside. E572 magnesium stearate
- Flavourings. Natural flavour can hide an ethanol carrier. Vanilla extract is a different, disputed row. Natural flavours · Vanilla extract
- Colour. Carmine / cochineal (E120) is insect. Plant colours are a different page. Natural colour is not a plant guarantee. E120 carmine
Creatine powder is a different question from a creatine capsule. D3 wants lanolin vs lichen. Collagen wants a species.
