Standing in the aisle
Four questions before you buy
Cosmetics, gym, medicine, kids. Each block is a procedure. It maps names to catalogue rows. It does not certify a product, and it is not a fatwa. Mashbooh means missing information, not haram.
Cosmetics
- What is the fat or wax? Lanolin is wool grease. Squalane is olive or shark. Stearic acid and glycerin are plant or animal. A vegan mark settles many of these. The word natural does not.
- What is the alcohol? Alcohol denat is the perfume/toner split. Phenoxyethanol is a different molecule. Do not treat them as one.
- Any animal protein? Collagen, keratin, snail mucin and carmine (E120) are source questions. Retinyl palmitate is a stub — insufficient evidence, not a yes.
- Is the parent code the same route? A parent code is not a silent ruling on a different manufacturing route. Ask for the INCI, not the front-of-pack claim.
Gym and capsules
- Powder or shell? Creatine powder is not a creatine capsule. Gelatin, HPMC and pullulan are the shell. The powder has its own row.
- What is the lubricant? Magnesium stearate (E572) is vegetable, synthetic, or animal. A vegetarian capsule does not settle the powder.
- Which sweetener route? E960a is stevia leaf extract. E960b is fermentation and stays insufficient-evidence. E960c and E960d are not the leaf-extract row.
- What do you ask the brand? Species or feedstock, country of processing, and whether a certificate is for this SKU. A certificate is not a class ruling.
Medicine
- Capsule shell? Gelatin follows the capsule row. E428 is the INS code for the same substance as gelatin/E441 — source-dependent, not a new verified label. HPMC and pullulan are different shells.
- Tablet polymer? E1210 carbomer is an EU/NI supplement thickener. Identity only. Insufficient evidence. E1211 is not on the FSA or EU list — do not invent it.
- Coating and colour? Shellac (E904) is scholarly disagreement. Carmine (E120) is the insect colour. Titanium dioxide is a separate row.
- Photograph rule A photo of a blister pack maps names. It does not certify the factory.
Kids
- Gummy or jelly? Gelatin, including packs that print E428, wants species and slaughter. A vegetarian gummy is a different shell.
- Colour? Carmine and the Southampton colours are different questions. Natural colour is not a plant guarantee.
- Slush and glycerol? E422 glycerol in slush is a dose question for young children (FSA guidance) and a feedstock question. Neither is a fatwa.
- Shared fryer? A kids’ menu item can be a plate problem even when the ingredient row is fine.
Parent codes match only the same substance. E960a does not rule E960b, E960c or E960d. A barcode maps ingredients. It is not a certificate.
